These are, at least to me, some of the defining characteristics of the classic Resident Evil experience. The fixed camera, stiff animations, and mostly static background paintings all remain, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Expect significantly enhanced visual detail – especially in character models – and some impressive dynamic lighting effects. The graphics have been nicely polished up, putting them about on par with Resident Evil HD Remaster (if you declined to pick up that game last year you can now buy both in a bundle called Resident Evil: Origins Collection ).
The remastered edition of Zero is about what you’d expect. However, after enduring the abhorrent Resident Evil 6 a few years back – and having a terrific time with last year’s Resident Evil HD Remaster (a brushed up version of the 2002 GameCube remake) – I was keen to revisit Zero, one of the last games to doggedly stick with most of the series’ original mechanics and conventions. I once viewed Resident Evil Zero – fifth among the core games in Capcom’s survival horror franchise, but a prequel to the original Resident Evil – as a minor low spot in the series.
